Bingham Heritage Trails Association was founded
in 2000 with the aim to raise the level of public awareness of Bingham’s
heritage. The Association takes a holistic view of the heritage
including in it the geology, archaeology, history, built environment
and natural history of the parish of Bingham.
The Association is a registered charity, Reg.
No. 1090475, with educational objectives. It is wholly a voluntary
association, depending on its own efforts and the generosity of
various donor organisations to fund its activities. This web site
was built mainly with funds from the Local Heritage Initiative.
The members of the Association carry out original
research, but also commission specialists to carry out research
in some areas. Research is ongoing. New findings will be added to
this site as they become available.
By March 2004 the Association had produced
six leaflets, which are available free of charge from outlets in
Bingham; four wall posters that are on permanent exhibition in the
offices of Bingham Town Council and an audio library of oral history,
deposited in Bingham Library.
In the twelve months up to May 2006, BHTA carried out a survey of Bingham Churchyard. A leaflet, Bingham’s Churchyard Trail has been published and is available with maps, a hand book and other papers in Bingham Library, the Town Council offices and from the Rector. All the information in them is also available on this web site.
Starting in November 2004 BHTA began a four-year project funded by the Local Heritage Initiative called The History of Settlement in Bingham. Part of it is an archaeological field-walking project covering all the arable land in the parish, some 2000 acres. The project is overseen by Trent & Peak Archaeological Unit, Nottingham. If anyone is interested in finding out details of this project they can contact BHTA via our general enquiries e-mail address.
