Medal Card Served in France from 27th October 1915. Awarded Victory, British, 15 Star medals In 1919 The King ordered rank of private to be replaced by guardsman in recognition of their role in the war. They lost over 4,000 men and 12,000 were wounded.

Edgar went to France in October 1915, just after the battalion had Transferred to the 3rd Guards Brigade of the Guards Division.
It was then engaged in various action on the Western Front including;
During 1916
The Battle of Flers-Courcelette, The Battle of Morval. (Somme campaign)
During 1917
The German retreat to the Hindenburg Line, The Battle of Pilkem, The Battle of the Menin Road, The Battle of Poelkapelle, The First Battle of Passchendaele, The Battle of Cambrai 1917.
During 1918
The Battle of St Quentin, The Battle of Bapaume, The First Battle of Arras 1918, The Battle of Albert, The Second Battle of Bapaume, The Battle of Havrincourt, The Battle of the Canal du Nord, The Battle of Cambrai 1918, The pursuit to the Selle, The Battle of the Selle, The Battle of the Sambre.

Walter Fenton served in the Grenadier Guards
ER 1921: The Coopers were now at the gas works.    
1922 Edgar died in Nottingham General Hospital on 15/1/1922 aged 35 leaving £157. 15s. to his mother Mary Annie Starbuck. He was living in Bottesford and was buried in Bingham Cemetery.
Death certificate has his address as The Gas Works, Bottesford. He was an engineer’s fitter.
Cause of death: Inanition over 8 months, no cause discovered. A post mortem was performed.
Inanition is described as “Severe weakness and wasting as results from lack of food, defect in assimilation, or neoplastic disease.” He would have starved to death.
