On Land Army girls:

  • I remember during the war when the Land Army girls, I never forget the trousers because they were like jodhpurs, were actually living with my grandmother at the gatehouse in Bingham. There were three of them. Everyday through the year, they would go out in the fields and work with all the local farmers, doing all sorts of jobs. I very often used to accompany them and get stuck in myself.

On railway houses:

  • They had a little tiny garret at the top of the house and being a child, I opened the door one day and when I looked in, it was the first time I had looked inside, this apparition was standing in front of me. It quite took me aback and it turned out to be a dummy and the dummy was dressed in a military uniform.
