J48108 A/B John Henry Burrows Flowers Royal Navy  
  Joined the Royal Navy as a boy entrant for 12 years on 11th November 1917.  
Naval Record He was 5 feet 2 1/8th inches tall, with a chest measurement of 32¾”. His occupation was given as “caller up boy”.
His first posting was to HMS Powerful II, a training establishment at Devonport aboard HMS Andromeda. He had a short period on HMS Moldavia in 1917 (luckily, as she was torpedoed in 1918). He served on a number of ships until 1945. His last ship was HMS Queen Elizabeth.
He was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct medal in 1932/3 and The Naval General Service (Palestine) medal for “PALESTINE 1936–39 – for service during the 'troubles.'. for information on the Royal Navy’s role in Palestine see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1936%E2%80%9339_Arab_revolt_in_Palestine#The_role_of_the_Royal_Navy

  No place called oslockton –mis transcription for Aslockton but census return says Derbyshire!

Census 1901 Family Father: Frank Burrows living in Mansfield as a boarder.

Mother: Mary E Flowers, b1876 in Aslockton, Nottinghamshire, married, was living at Rebecca Row, Derby, with her
Son: John H Burrows, b 1900 in Derby
Daughter: Florrie Burrows, b 1901 in Derby.
Working as Sand carter Members of the family seem to have used both Burrows and Flowers as their surname at different times.

Shown as ‘A’ (AVL) Moore lane, but mother not listed. Also listed at 4 Moor Lane – George Henry Barnes (from 1927)
Mother Mary Elizabeth died 11 Dec 1924 aged 50 and buried in Bingham cemetery with Frank.
Clearly Barnes moved into the Flower’s family home after he married Florrie in 1925. They had a daughter (Edna) in 1927.

ER 1930, 1931 John Henry Flowers and William Burrows Flowers both marked ‘a’ on list. Also listed at 4 Moor Lane – George Henry Barnes AND Florrie Barnes AND Thomas Flowers (now of voting age and also marked ‘a’)  
1984 Died 28th May 1984 aged 84 at his home 39 Hill Drive, Bingham. The death certificate gives his occupations as
1. Able Seaman (Gunner, Royal navy) (retired)
2. Civilian Batman (retired).
