Grantham Journal, Thursday 30th March 1911
BINGHAM PAINTER ROBS A MONEY BOX

At the Bingham Police-court today, James McCann, painter, of Bingham, pleaded guilty to stealing £1 from William Singleton, hawker of Bingham, on March 22nd.

Prosecutor (not named but possibly Marriott) explained that he had put two half-sovereigns in a box which he placed in the living room cupboard. He went out to a concert, leaving Mrs McCann in charge. When he returned accused was also in the house. The following day, on requiring some money, witness opened the box, and found it empty.

Police-constable Nixon said he found the accused had changed two half-sovereigns, one at the Chesterfield Arms on the night of the 22nd, and a second at the Post-office. At first McCann denied knowledge of the theft, but subsequently he admitted it. His method had been to force open the lid with a table knife sufficiently to shake the coins out.
Prisoner pleaded that it was his first offence.

Supt. Frear said he found that most of the money had been spent in public-houses. Mrs McCann had not received a farthing of it.
Characterising it as a bad case, the bench (Mr H Smith and Mr G Brown) passed sentence of one month’s hard labour.

1925-29 electoral roll Newgate Street, James Joseph but no mention of Mary Elizabeth Joseph Marriott also disappeared from the electoral rolls from 1924. He died in Chesterfield in 1981 [Family tree on Ancestry.co.uk] see below It would seem that Mary and Joseph left their respective spouses in 1924 and went off together first to Loughborough and then to Chesterfield.

Smith is an assumed name. Joseph Marriott was born on 3rd September 1890, the same as Joseph “Smith”. Mary has changed her name to Celia.
John is recorded above as a son of Mary and James McCann.
1950
FBMD
Mary E McCann died on 12th September 1950, aged 65 at Chesterfield

Note: apart from the references to Smith, there are two inconsistencies in this record. Mary’s middle name should be Elizabeth (although her sister was Edith) and McCann’s forename was James. They may have been trying to mask their true identities.
Death certificate shows “Mary Edith Smith, otherwise McCann, widow of John McCann, fitter”. Death reported by Joseph Smith. He and Mary lived at 73 Locoford Road, Chesterfield. She lived with Joseph Smith. He was actually Joseph Marriott and had changed his name.
1981 Joseph Smith died 13 October 1981 at Chesterfield. Born 3 September at Cropwell Butler - matching Marriott’s birth certificate. Occupation glass works labourer, retired.
Died in Walton Hospital Chesterfield of Mycardial Infarction (heart attack). Not on FBMD or Ancestry.com, but latter leads to Joseph Smith death register
