WORLD WAR I

Bingham War Memorial

Service Record

264520 [LR] Lance Corporal Ernest Munks 12th Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbyshire Regiment)
53rd (Young Soldiers) Leicester Regiment
born 1884
No service/pension records exist on Ancestry
Roll of Honour
AVL
RoH says he served on the Home Front with the Notts & Derbyshire Regiment; therefore he would not have been entitled to any medals.
AVL has 264520 L/Cpl 53rd (Y.S.) Leicester Regt. The Service Number cannot be corroborated as there is no service record or medal card.
AVL address: 12 Long Acre Row
His daughter’s birth certificate (Oct 1917, see below) has him as “12th Sherwood Foresters”.
Forces war records 12th (Service) Battalion (Pioneers)

April 1915 Became a Pioneer Battalion of the 24th Division.

1915
The Battle of Loos (the Division suffered severe losses and took the rest of the year to rebuild).
1916
The German gas attack at Wulverghem, The Battle of Delville Wood, The Battle of Guillemont.
1917

11.11.1918 Ended the war at Le Louvion east of Bavai, France.
Research Note:
We are unable to resolve an inconsistency here. The Roll of Honour has him on the Home Service. There are no medal records, which supports the Home front attribution. The birth certificate for his daughter shows him to be in the 12th Sherwood’s. Army records show that battalion to have been involved in the Passchendaele operations in 1917.
It may be that a reserve contingent stayed at home. He may then have transferred to be a ‘mentor’ for the Young Soldiers’ battalion. It may have been that he had health issues that stopped him serving abroad. With no extant service records we cannot tell.
Long Long Trail web site 53rd (Young Soldier) Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment
Up to 27 October 1917, this was known as 12th Young Soldier Battalion and had no regimental affiliation. Before that it had been 13th (Reserve) Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters. A basic recruit training unit based at Rugeley Camp, it was part of 1st Reserve Brigade. At some point thereafter it moved to "F" Lines, Hipswell Camp, Catterick and may later have been at Clipstone Camp.
His daughter was born 1st October 1917 and his occupation was given as 12th Sherwood Foresters. This was just before the battalion became the 53rd.
It seems that the 12th Young Soldiers was a different unit to the 12th (Pioneers) who served in France.
Forces war records web site 53rd (Young Soldier) Battalion
27.10.1917 Formed at Rugeley from the 12th Young Soldier Battalion of the Training Reserve (previously the 13th Sherwood Foresters), then moved to Cannock Chase in the 1st Training Reserve Brigade.
Nov 1918 Moved to Clipstone.
Research note He may have been involved in a boy soldier band, see http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com for photograph of band and more details.
We do not know if he was involved with the young soldiers’ band; if he was he may be on this photograph!
