Embarked Southampton: 2/8/1915; Disembarked Boulogne: 4/8/1915
Siege batteries were deployed behind the front line, tasked with destroying enemy artillery, supply routes, railways and stores. The batteries were equipped with heavy howitzer guns firing large calibre 4,6,8,and 9.2 inch shells in a high trajectory.

26/11/16 William Strong became a gun layer, which meant he measured and sighted the gun.
For this he received an extra 6d a day class I. proficiency payment.
23/11/17 he was reclassified for class i.p.p and received 6d a day.
18/9/18 Sent to 3rd Army Rest Camp until 2/10/1918
20/1/1919 Back to UK for demobilisation. Given £2 advance of pay
26/4/1919 Received a character reference for employment after he wrote to RGA requesting a reference.
