The Swanwicks

The 1881 census lists several Swanwick households in Long Acre:-

1. Mary Swanwick Widow 75

2. George Swanwick Head 54 Castrator Vet Surgeon
Mary Swanwick wife 50
George Swanwick son 20

3. Joseph Swanwick Head 50 Cottager Farmer 13 Acres
Harriet Swanwick Wife 44
Helen died in 1874 and Joseph remarried in 1876 to Harriet
Walter G. Swanwick Son 19 Wheelwright
Samuel Swanwick Son 14
Mary H. Swanwick Dau 11
Edwin Swanwick Son 4

The lack of a Christian name in the 1882 sale documents for East Cottage may reflect the period of uncertainty following his death in 1878 and probate being granted in June 1879. Perhaps no one had got round to inserting Joseph’s name. The later reference to Samuel could just be inaccurate and indeed is corrected in the later 1891 mortgage. Joseph Swanwick’s house was opposite Donkey Green Cottage and might be the engulfed cottage at number 18 (see Holme Lodge).

Swanwicks also appear significantly in the records of Jasmine Cottage. They may be branches of the same family but we have no information as yet.

The 1871 census clearly identifies the two farming families with grandfather Samuel still alive, although Helen seems to have become Harriet!
