On moving into the Bingham shop in 1968:

  • It was a counter service shop then. Oak shelving from floor to ceiling, large wooden counters, and the staff used to be behind the counters to serve you.

On stock-taking:

  • 596 at 10d was dead easy, but 596 at 8 ½d, was a nightmare.

On strange finds:

  • We were extending the rear entrance when the handy-man came running in and said, “We have got a body.” So we stopped work and decided we had better ring the police.
