WORLD WAR I

Bingham War Memorial

Service Record

63405 Gunner John Wilford C/114th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery Born 1887
Medal card Posted to France 18th September 1915.

Roll of Honour Listed as serving in Salonika Various web sites suggest that 660 Company went fist to France then later to Salonika, which prhaps resolves the conflict between medal roll and Roll of Honour

“C/114th Brigade was with 1st Division throughout - the war diaries of 25th Brigade can be downloaded for a few £s .. Reference WO95-1248. Which provide a day by day account [which is not as interesting as it sounds. It’s very uninformative.]”
Absent voters list 1918 Address given as Newgate Street Brother Henry is immediately before him on the list for Newgate Street

Research Note An alternative candidate was John Thomas Wilford whose family lived in Cherry Street was rejected by the researchers. In 1901 he was a Grocer’s porter. In July 1909 he emigrated to the USA. He was living in London and was a valet. In 1910 he was in Cook, Illinois He travelled to America a second time, on the 6th March 1914 aboard the Lusitania. Again he was a valet living in London.

It seems more likely that Gunner John Wilford was the brother of George who had already joined the Royal field Artillery, his brother’s regiment. George was killed in action in January 1915.
The absent voters list confirms the identity of John.
