WORLD WAR II

THOSE WHO SURVIVED

Our research into the histories of those who served in and survived the First World War was made possible because of the list of these men contained in the Roll of Honour prepared as part of the memorial in 1920.

No such list was produced for World War 2.

However, the Bingham branch of the Royal British Legion did find in their records a list of names of men and women who qualified for a grant payable from the Bingham and Saxondale Returning Forces Fund. The fund was managed by Mrs E Sharpe, who was President of the Bingham Women’s institute and Mr George Attenborough, President or chairman of Bingham Royal British Legion.

This list has proven a valuable source of information but it has its limitations. The chief of these is that the only copy we have been able to locate is incomplete ending, as it does, among family names commencing with the letter ‘P’. Moreover, its semi-official status means that we cannot be certain of its comprehensiveness.

In an attempt to address these limitations, we have used information from a variety of other sources with a view to compiling a more complete list. These sources include: Royal British Legion membership records; a search of newspaper reports for the period; interviews with Bingham residents, including family members of the fallen; public appeals for information; serendipitous discoveries and recollections. The sources for each of the names below are indicated in the entry for that individual.

That said, the list below cannot not lay claim to completeness and may not be fully accurate. Where a field in the linked record is empty, it means we have been unable to trace the necessary information. Where an entry is labelled “possible’, it indicates that we have found a relevant record that appears to match the individual in question but we cannot unequivocally confirm this. Such possible matches derive from a range of sources such as incomplete entries on the website Forces War Records or ambiguous Census or other genealogical records.

We welcome further information that readers may be able to supply on any of the names on this list, including omissions and other corrections that may be necessary.

Personnel believed to have served and survived.

Our research is still ongoing and we are uploading the results in tranches as work is completed. To find out more about each individual, click on any highlighted family name in the table below:
