WORLD WAR I
Sources and Acknowledgements
We are grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund who sponsored this project.
We are also extremely grateful to all the individuals, families and organisations that helped us with information and photographs.
Information has been extracted from many sources – Military records; London Gazette announcements; The Commonwealth War Graves Commission; National Archives; Nottinghamshire County Archives; The British Newspaper Archive; Notts public libraries; census returns; parish records; National Schools logbooks; Trade Directories; General Register Office for actual Birth, marriage and Death certificates; Bingham Parish Magazine; electoral rolls and particularly the Absent Voters Lists. In addition many web sites were visited extensively e.g. Ancestry.com; Find My Past.co.uk; Genesreunited.co.uk; Forces-war-records.co.uk; Free BMD.org.uk for birth marriages and deaths. For genealogical research we have found it pays to consult at least two sites for a particular record to allow for errors in transcription.
We also wish to thank the various regimental museums and regimental or battalion associations who supplied us with forces records including extracts from the battalion war diaries.
Photographs have been used with the kind permission of the descendants of the people concerned and also the Sherwood Foresters’ Museum
Our thanks also go to Ambrow Ltd who have helped us in putting our work onto the website.
Finally to the people who made this project possible – in particular Robin Aldworth; Joyce Allen; Geoff Ashton; Joan Ashton; Richard Barnett; Rupert Bear: Mike Patten; Hilda Smith of Bingham Heritage Trails Association together with Eric Sharp and Bill Stark of Bingham British Legion
